It sounds so simple. H20 - two parts hydrogen and
one part oxygen. This substance is also known as water, is one of the most
essential elements to health and is so important that your body actually has a
specific drought management
system in place to
prevent dehydration and ensure your survival. Water might be everywhere, but
one must never take it for granted.
Water
makes up more than two thirds of human body weight, and without water, we would
die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and
lungs 90%. A mere 2% drop in our body's water supply can trigger signs of
dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty
focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen. (Are you having trouble
reading this? Drink up!) Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes
of daytime fatigue. An estimated seventy-five percent of Australians have mild, chronic dehydration. Pretty scary statistic for a
developed country where water is readily available through the tap or bottle
water.
Water is important to the mechanics of the human body. The body cannot
work without it, just as a car cannot run without gas and oil. In fact, all the
cell and organ functions that make up our entire anatomy and physiology depend
on water for their functioning.
- Water
serves as a lubricant
- Water
forms the base for saliva
- Water
forms the fluids that surround the joints.
- Water
regulates the body temperature, as the cooling & heating is
distributed through perspiration.
- Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby
eliminating waste - the best detox agent.
- Water
helps to regulate metabolism
In addition to the daily maintenance of our bodies, water also plays a
key role in the prevention of disease. Drinking eight glasses of water daily
can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, bladder cancer by 50% and it can
potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer. And those are just a few
examples!
Since water is such an important component to our physiology, it would
make sense that the quality of the water should be just as important as the
quantity. Drinking water should always be clean and free of contaminants to
ensure proper health and wellness.
You will be amazed with the benefits of drinking water:
- Lose
weight: Drinking
water helps you lose weight because it flushes down the by-products of fat
breakdown. Drinking water reduces hunger, it’s an effective appetite
suppressant so you’ll eat less. Plus, water has zero calories.
- Natural Remedy for Headache: Helps to relieve headache and back pains
due to dehydration. Although many reasons contribute to headache,
dehydration is the common one.
- Look
Younger with Healthier Skin: You’ll look younger when your skin is properly hydrated. Water
helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes skin and increases skin
elasticity.
- Better
Productivity at Work: Your
brain is mostly made up of water, thus drinking water helps you think
better, be more alert and more concentrated.
- Better
Exercise: Drinking
water regulates your body temperature. That means you’ll feel more
energetic when doing exercises. Water also helps to fuel your muscle.
- Helps
in Digestion and Constipation: Drinking
water raises your metabolism because it helps in digestion. Fiber and
water goes hand in hand so that you can have your daily bowel movement.
- Less
Cramps and Sprains: Proper
hydration helps keep your joints and muscles lubricated, so you’ll less
likely get cramps and sprains.
- Less
Likely to Get Sick and Feel Healthy: Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu and other ailments
like kidney stones and heart attack. Water with lemon is used for ailments
like respiratory disease, intestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis
etc. In another words one of the benefits of drinking water is that it can
improve your immune system.
- Relieves
Fatigue: Water
is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the
body. If your body lacks water, your heart, for instance, needs to work
harder to pump out the oxygenated blood to all cells, so are the rest of
the vital organs, your organs will be exhausted and so will you.
- Good
Mood: Your body feels very
good and that’s why you feel happy.
- Reduce
the Risk of Cancer: Related
to the digestive system, some studies show that drinking a healthy amount
of water may reduce the risks of bladder cancer and colon cancer. Water
dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and
shortens the time in which they are in contact with bladder lining.
Thirst is a result and sign of dehydration so if you wait until you are thirsty then it is already too late. A guide to the amount of water you should be drinking daily is for every 22 kg of weight drink a liter of water. If you weigh 50kg then a minimum of 2.25 liters of water, 80 kg = 3.63 liters and 100 kg = 4.5 liters.
During exercise at least one liter of water should be consumed for every hour you do depending on the intensity. During sleep you are continuously loosing water by perspiration and breathing. When you wake up after a nights sleep one of the first things your body does is cleanse itself which is a lose of more water. The best thing to do is to drink one or two large glasses of water before you have breakfast. You can squeeze a lemon or lime into it to make it more appealing if you like.
